Smoking plus Mesothelioma is equal to Death – A Study

Smoking is the leading cause of the lung cancer of preventable death, but smokers who are exposed to the asbestos are at greater risk of developing lung cancer than the person who was never exposed to the asbestos particles.

There was research made on relationship between the lung cancer and the combined causes of the lung cancer and exposure of the asbestos particles. Though the affect of the asbestos and cigarette independently cause lung cancer, the result of both is at the increased risk and greater than the additive sum of the two risk. It is suggested that the risk for the exposure and smoking exceeds the total risk of their sum, this is known as the multiplicative synergism which results of this the smoker who are exposed to the asbestos particles are 80-90times more likely to develop the lung cancer and through this number the person can also develop the diseases called Asbestosis and Mesothelioma.

There are six types of asbestos particles namely Chrysotile, Amosite, crocidolite, Anthophyllite, Tremolite, Actionolite. Exposure to all these six types of asbestos increases ones risk of developing the lung cancer. It is also noted that the increase risk of the lung cancer from the smoking varies from the amount of cigarette smoked, duration of smoking, product smoked, inhalation whereas increase for asbestos also depends on the extent and duration of the exposure but also the types of asbestos and nature of exposure.
