Peritoneal Mesothelioma |
Peritoneal Mesothelioma mostly affects the lining of the Abdomen (Gut) termed as Peritoneum anatomically. Like other forms of Mesothelioma, this cancer is also caused due to the previous exposure of the patient with Asbestos directly or indirectly.
What are its sites of its occurrence?
After Pleural Mesothelioma, Peritoneal Mesothelioma is the second most diagnosed form of Mesothelioma. The peritoneal lining has a nature of protracting into the area under the Lungs. Hence, this kind of cancer also shows its complications in the area in and around lungs. The Peritoneum throws itself into several folds for covering the organs underlying it in the Gut. Due to this fact as the peritoneal Mesothelioma spreads, the ascites occurs. Ascites is collection of the fluid in the body of patient and is localized in its nature. The collection of fluid results in the development of pressure in the peritoneal layer. Further, as the pressure increases the underlying organs in the abdomen, start to function improperly and the individual feels development of the mass and heaviness in the area.
How does it occur?
Generally due to the sharp nature of the Asbestos fibers they cling onto the clothes of the host and finally enter the body while inhaling. The asbestos fibers penetrate through the pulmonary layers (layers of the lungs) and enter the abdomen. Here these particles cause the problems in the cell cycles. Interrupting the normal division and growth of the cell called as the development of the Malignancy of the cell. There is a fair possibility of the traveling of the Asbestos particles from the Pleural levels to the peritoneal level via the lymph system. The researches show that if the Asbestos travels down the food-pipe it leaves behind a trail of inflammation on the tract and it results in growing up of the malignant cells.
What are its Symptoms?
The symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma cancer includes bowel obstruction, acute to severe abdominal pain, difficulty in breathing, nausea, loss of appetite, weakness, vomiting, swelling of the abdominal region, anemia and fever.
Diagnosis of Mesothelioma.
The Diagnosis of the oncologist starts with the Imaging techniques like X-ray, CT-Scan or MRI. For a definitive reporting of the same the patients are asked to get a tissue biopsy done. Mesothelioma is mostly detected in its later stages hence lowering the chances of an individual to recover from the same. The analysis of the tumor cells also gives a fair idea of the stage to which the cancer has developed in the body of the patient.
How is it treated?
The treatment of the Peritoneal Mesothelioma is done primarily through Radiation and chemotherapy. These treatments are known to reduce the pain in the affected areas of the patient and improve the quality of life.
